When Life gives you lemons

When Life Gives You Lemons is a tale of loss and living that begins neatly and ends messily. The work is constructed out of a literal accumulation of materials and memories that scale up absurdity and abstract grief (all the way into laughter). Every re-imagination of the work is unique to the realities and dynamics of the environment in which it is experienced.

Sophie Allen is a Chicago-based dancer, choreographer and teacher who pushes playfulness, nuance and rigor to the forefront of her creative endeavors. She is both tired of being serious and seriously tired. She loses sleep at night contemplating loss that is both happening but hasn’t happened yet. She wonders what keeps you up at night, and how humor and grief can share space. She is fascinated by acts of subversion, confrontation, confession and concealment in performance—specifically for the purpose of reimagining personal and collective histories… and she loves to make people smile. As a performer, she has worked with Darling Shear, Ayako Kato/Art Union Humanscape, Katlin Michael Bourgeois and Rigo Saura among others. Her choreography has been commissioned by Midwest RAD Fest, FACT/SF Summer Dance Festival, COMMON conservatory, Detroit Dance Exchange, Going Dutch Festival, and Peridance/Performance Lab Showcase. Sophie holds both a BFA in Dance and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the University of Michigan and is a certified Countertechnique® Teacher.
