Daniel Burkholder

Daniel Burkholder is a choreographer, improviser, performer, teacher, and lighting designer based in Milwaukee, WI. Daniel has presented work throughout the Americas at numerous venues, including: Tribeca Performing Arts Center (NYC), 92nd Street Y (NYC), Danceworks (MKE), The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at University of Maryland College Park (MD), CenterStage @ Reston Community Center (VA), Dance Place (DC), along the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers (MD), in front of the Martin Luther King Library (DC) and the Shakespeare Theater (DC), and as part of the Mid-West Regional Alternative Dance Festival, Breaking Ground: Contemporary Dance and Film Festival (AZ), 848 Community Space (SF), and as part of a week-long residency in Manta, Ecuador. Some of his recent creative projects include Scenic Route: MKE, a 2-hour nature hike along the Milwaukee River with site-specific dance and music performances along the way. Since May 2015, Daniel and his wife, Andrea, have presented Real Time, a performance the first Friday of each month featuring dance, aerial performance, and local and regional guest artists. In the spring of 2017 Daniel presented, in collaboration with Danceworks Performance Company, Stories from a Life in both Milwaukee and Washington, D.C., which explored the role memories play in one’s life as told through video interviews with his 96 year old grandmother. Paul Kosidowksi, of Milwaukee Magazine called Stories from a Life, “a remarkable dance theater piece”, and “delicate and beautiful”. Previously, John Schneider of Milwaukee Express has called Daniel’s The Chemistry of Lime Trees “...intellectually solid, inquisitive, and wonderfully ambitious”. The Washington Post has noted that Daniel “relishes the unknown and he encourage his colleagues to push themselves to the edge and beyond.” Daniel also recently served as choreographer for Cooperative Performance Milwaukee’s production of Fruition of a Delusion. Daniel is currently an Assistant Professor of Dance at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and holds an M.F.A in Performing Arts: Dance from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (2011) , an M.A. in Dance from American University (2002), a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College (1990), a Certificate in Somatic Studies from Moving on Center/School for Participatory Arts (1999), and is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner (2005).
