Anna bAUER/jAIRUS CARR

Anna Bauer and Jairus Carr are dancers and choreographers living in Austin, Texas. Both artists currently dance with the Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company while maintaining personal focuses on choreography. Anna and Jairus began collaborating in 2022.

Anna graduated with her BFA in Dance from Sam Houston State University in 2021. Events across the nation have been kind enough to include her pieces in their lineup: most recently Austin Dance Festival, Barnstorm Dance Fest, White Wave SoloDuo Dance Festival, and Texas Dance Improvisation Festival. She has also brought her work to national festivals, including Mashup’s International Women’s Day Dance Festival (Los Angeles), MADCO's Dare to Dance (St. Louis), and White Wave SoloDuo Dance Festival (New York City). Anna has also had the honor of completing residencies with Bellingham Repertory Dance in Bellingham, Washington, and Aimed Dance Company in Beaumont, Texas.

Jairus has been in the Austin area since 2007. With a B.S. in Business Management from WGU which has served him very little, Jairus has trained and danced with several different studios and instructors in the Austin area. Jairus has had the pleasure of working with Early Era Collective, Jennifer Sherburn, the University of Texas student body, Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company, and BLiPSWiTCH. Jairus continues to explore movement, choreography, and every medium he can make time for, in Austin, Texas and beyond.

Anna believes dance is an opportunity for meaning-making, and Jairus hates defining anything, like a true nihilist. Nonetheless, they both ask this question: What keeps dance interesting, for both the mover and the viewer? Bauer and Carr’s choreographic collaborations attempt to answer this question with contrast: they meld athleticism and gesture, speed and patience, musicality and internal timing to form works that hover between abstraction and narrative.

In dance and in life, Anna and Jairus are trying their best. They also make coffee, read books, and hold hands.
